Alice Cooper @ Gröna Lund, Stockholm, Sweden 3/7 – 15

Posted in Concerts, Music, Uncategorized with tags , on July 3, 2015 by Sara Hammerzmith

So, around ten this morning we started our outbound journey to Stockholm and Gröna Lund to once again see God himself on stage, and for Nathan to see Alice Cooper and Glen Sobel, his drumhero.

After having lunch at Subway we headed over to Gröna Lund and began with showing Nathan the stage to really get it through his head – we were seeing Alice Cooper, and he couldn’t believe his eyes. We grabbed an ice cream each, and while doing so, we decided that we should first of all, probably buy the posters right away so we didn’t need to bother worry with that, and second of all… we are at an amusement park. That has a funhouse… I’m not going to Boda Borg until Friday so….

Of course, we had a go at it. I was really worried about the steps up front, because last time I did them, I failed miserably, but on the same time… These are the kind of things I push myself to do, so following two steps behind Nathan, I took the steps. It was almost a disaster, seeing Nathan almost fell onto me and I had to tell Michelle to stay back in order not to cause a domino effect, but eventually we got up with a heartrate WAY too fast. After this, it was all fun and games with spinning rooms and wheels and uneven floors. I love these kind of houses.

nathanmichelle

After a round in the funhouse we picked up popcorn and crisps in order to get some salt in this heat, and sat and just chatted before the big event of the night was about to happen. After this, we headed to the stage and got decent spot in the back of the… well, place before the stage.

Right on time, 20.00, he entered the stage with “Hello Hooray”, to my big surprise! I admit, I was expecting it to be the same show as he had on Graspop, but oy vey did he surprise me! And to make it even better, he followed suit with one of my personal favorites – “House of Fire”. Yeah, this was gonna be a good night.

150307gronanalice1

He followed suit with “No More Mr Nice Guy” and “Under My Wheels” before it was time for the, a bit cheeky, “I’ll Bite Your Face Off”.

This was followed by “Billion Dollar Babies” with the money as usual, “Lost In America”, “Hey Stoopid”, “Dirty Diamonds” with the necklaces… and finally it was time for probably one of my favorite moments on Alice Cooper shows, especially nowadays.

“Welcome To My Nightmare”

150703gronanalice3

HE EVEN BROUGHT HIS SNAKE. Really, like I said on Graspop, the only thing I’m missing right now is the bloody dancers. And it will be perfect. But you know, this will really do!

This was followed by “Go to Hell” before the next surprise was put out… and seriously…

“He’s Back (The Man Behind The Mask)”.

Like, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS SONG. And hearing it live, everytime, it… I can’t even describe it to you? He, as well as Lordi, brought Jason and everything. Of course, the badass chick beat Jason down and started hunting Alice’s band instead.

Right after this was done, Alice put on a policehat, and even though my gut and heart told me “this is it! This is Wicked Young Man! It’s back!” I didn’t dare to hope too much… but then he started marching in pace with a very, VERY familiar guitar riff.

It’s back. My favorite Alice Cooper song, “Wicked Young Man” is fucking back people. Oh god, how do I even explain the big deal this is to you?! Ahh.

Right after this, it was time for another top moment of the show – “Feed My Frankenstein”.

150703gronanalice4

I always love the theatrical numbers a little more than the non-theatrical. It adds to it, you know?

“Ballad of Dwight Fry” followed with the creepy nurse pulling her shit on him, forcing them to have their occasional dance that ends in nothing but pain, but what can you do?

150703gronanalice5

Of course, the mandatory cutting-the-head off followed as well as “I Love The Dead” with the crewmember running around with Alice Coopers head.

After this, they pulled Alice out on a hospital bed, covered with a sheet, and when the nurse was about to check underneath, Alice rose up and a voice, presumably “God” was talking to him about how he had cheated death again, and it made me remember Sweden Rock. It was the medley.

150703gronanalice6

And I was right. Out came the tombstones for Jim Morrison, John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix and Keith Moon and Alice pulled off the covers and tributes to the late musicians. It’s something very special seeing an icon like Alice doing this. Paying tribute to other successful and famous musicians. I don’t know how to put it to words, it’s just… very dear to me you know?

150703gronanalice7

The covers included songs as “Break On Through (To the other side)”, “Revolution”, “Foxy Lady” and “My Generation”.

The medley was followed by the classic “I’m Eighteen” before wrapping it up with “Poison”.

Before we knew it, the band came back, the bubbles started and the schoolbells were ringing.

“Schools Out”.

What a party that song is. It’s the perfect wrap up, especially with the adding of “Another Brick in The Wall”, and the baloons and all the confetti and what not. It’s really the perfect ending, of a perfect night.

150703gronanalice2

Seriously, Thank you. ALL OF YOU. Nita, Ryan, Alleysan, Glen, Tommy and Chuck. You are the bomb, all of you. Queen and kings of the world. I love you all.

After this, we tried to leave the park, but to our dismay some stupid idiot had put their key in OUR locker and therefore, it screwed with our chances of getting our stuff out, Gladly, the staff helped us out fairly quickly and we could get going. Quick visit to McDonalds and then running off to Cityterminalen and catching our bus home.

It was our first time trying out a new bus service… AND THE BUSES. So much legspace, so comfortable leatherseats, I didn’t even know what to say or do? Two electricity sources, it was like… I love Swebus, but Nettbuss… I felt like a princess! Oh my god.

Thank you all, Michelle, Nathan, Robert, Gröna Lund, Alice Cooper + band for this amazing evening. I love you all.

New video from the Butcher Babies

Posted in Music, Uncategorized with tags on June 26, 2015 by Sara Hammerzmith

Alrighty all people. It’s been a mighty week since I saw the fine ladies live at Graspop Metal Meeting after about eight months of waiting, and fittingly enough, today is the day they finally released the video of their new song “Monsters Ball” off their upcoming album “Take it like a Man” (set to release in August).

This song was absolute KILLER at Gpop, which made me pretty excited to see the video. And it’s finally here! Any opinions?

In all honesty, this song is a lot heavier than their previous material which makes me a little bit concerned in all honesty. I always liked how they combined melody with heavier elements, and they are starting to lose it, or at least with this song.

On the other hand, this song is like “Custer”. Kills the pit. Split split. Excited for the album, though!

Graspop Metal Meeting – Day 2

Posted in Concerts, Music, Uncategorized with tags , , , , on June 20, 2015 by Sara Hammerzmith

So, last night ended pretty late because of Marilyn Manson, but it was sooo worth it! Got up a bit later the next day, and I took it fairly slow, seeing my first band wasn’t until Korpiklaani, but no rest until your dead, right, so I got up and figured I’d spend the day checking out the metal market and the shopping. I had a few CD’s, or well, a lot of CD’s I was looking for, so why not?

W went around a bit looking for Kittie albums, met up with Robert and Mie and then headed over to Exodus. It was nice seeing the guys again, despite not calling myself a fan.

Right after this, I headed over to Korpiklaani.

Korpiklaani

So, here’s the deal. Without being fully informed of every band in this world, I believe there are two bands, no matter what band you put up next to them, no matter how much you love or hate them, you will, wheter you want it or not, have fun. The first band is Alestorm, and the second one, is Korpiklaani.

The set lasted about an hour, but seriously, it felt like it was shorter. I’m not sure exactly what it is with this festival, but it feels like everything just ends faster. Gladly, unlike Butcher Babies the crowd had a lot better energy and like I said above… Ultimate partyband. I don’t regret going for them over Lacuna Coil.

After Korpiklaani, I wandered off to the market in order to first of all pick up some pins, one Ghost one for Michelle and Alestorm, Sabaton and Steel Panther for me. I sent my mother a picture on Facebook of the SlipKnot t-shirts as I couldn’t make up my mind.

You see, I went to the merch booth so determined to get the Korpiklaani tanktop and the yellow (so to put it) SlipKnot shirt, but once at the barrier I noticed this other shirt that wasn’t freaky-freaky, with all their masks in the shape of an S AND a skull, which wasn’t a tour shirt (opens up possibilities) and with that, my brain was messed up, so I got at first only the tanktop and uploaded the picture. I can’t send actual photo messages with my phone, so uploading is the best option. Only annoying thing is that everyone and no one keeps liking the pic. And I’m like, people. It’s just shirt. A bunch of them.

But, like Johnny Depp once said, “If you are torn between two women, always go for the second one. If you loved the first one, you wouldn’t have fallen for the second one”, said and done. I went for the S / Skull shirt and I’m pretty pleased with my choice. I already have a tour shirt for Prepare for Hell so I’ll live.

This took longer than you think it would, and I headed back to Mainstage 2 to catch God himself play, with other words, it was time for my annual Alice Cooper show.

Alice Cooper

The started off the entire set to big cheers with “Department of Youth” before continuing with “No More Mr Nice Guy” and was quickly launched into “Under My Wheels”. Alice Cooper shows progress pretty quickly thanks to the lack of mid-speaking. I love mid-speaking when it’s Ola Salo doing it, but most other bands could really just shut up since most of them don’t have anything worthy to say anyway.

The show was just as fun and eventful as usual, but I need to highlight one particular event.

Which is “Welcome to my Nightmare”. I LOVE, maybe it’s me who have forgotten, but I love, love, love how he’s brought back the… how do I put it? The Welcome to my Nightmare costume? The big hat and everything. All I need now is the dancers with the bloodfilled bag on their heads, and the song will be perfect. But it is just as good right now.

I’m not gonna go over this much more, due to me wanting to keep these entries somewhat short, but I can only say two things – Alice Cooper never fails to impress nor entertain, and Nita Strauss is a queen.

graspopalice

After Alice Cooper we headed over to the Metal Dome to see Alcest. I must admit I was a bit torn between Alcest and Korn, but feelings decided against Korn in favor of Alcest.

While I do have quite a few friends who enjoy Alcest, I can’t say I’ve myself ever been a fan, but I did enjoy the show. Atmospheric, and despite being metal, there was this certain kind of calm over everything. It was very nice.

graspopalcest

After Alcest was done, I headed over to Mainstage 1 to wait for what was the band I looked forward the most to see, SlipKnot, and thanks to Graspop’s good taste in stage-placing, we could catch Judas Priest from where we stood.

I was really worried. I sat down for most of the Priest set, feeling really tired, and tried to drink in case it was because of dehydration, but it didn’t help. And it pissed me off a bit, since I hate when I don’t sleep properly so I end up tired for the things I’m excited for. But when Judas Priest started playing “Jawbreaker” I kind of woke up a bit, and after that… I couldn’t stand still.

graspoppriest

I just kept jumping around in small jumps to the point Antoine even pointed out to me that SlipKnot hadn’t even started yet, but you know, that doesn’t stop me. Once I’m up I’m up, you know?

SlipKnot

BUT, then, “XIX” started and internally, I kind of exploded. I guess this is what it truly feels like being REALLY exicted for something. Most of the time, I feel excited, but it has been some time (last time was probably Madrid or even Prepare For Hell tour itself) where I’ve felt like my organs were about to explode. And when “Sarcastrophe” began…

First of all, it took me all up to now to realize the song is actually called “SARcastrophe” and not “SCARcastrophe”, so I’ve basically spelled it wrong for over six months. Nice.

But aside typos, I kind lost it. Like you always do at SlipKnot shows. Or at least the two I’ve been with before. Since I completely owned my company I sort of half assed teamed up with some other guys and just you know… like the guy said “You’re in the headbanger zone!” And yes, they were. My hair even got stuck in a guys backpack. Oh dear.

Oh right, the show. After “Sarcastrophe” they continued, just as previously with “The Heretic Anthem”, “Psychosocial” and “The Devil in I” before the first surprise of the evening came – “AOV”.

Like… I can’t say I’ve ever been a fan of that particular song, but it was cool to hear live. Not the best, but it’s fine, you know? And then….. DING DING DING DIIIIIINGGG

Vermillion“.

The horrible part of me wished for this NOT to be “my” setlist, because I didn’t wanna give Antoine that satisfaction, but I’m also very very very very secretly happy they did “my” setlist. When I’m saying “my” setlist, it means they play “Vermilion”, “Eyeless”(these two are my two fave songs of SlipKnot) and “Wait and Bleed”. Michelle’s setlist is the one that includes “Dead Memories”, “Disasterpieaces” and “Opium of the People”.

After “Wait and Bleed” Corey started talking about some new video they made. And that is basically what made my eyes pop. The only, ONLY SONG I missed during Prepare for Hell Tour earlier this year was “Killpop”, and hearing Corey say in an interview that Clown dislikes playing slow songs, I didn’t ever see them actually playing this piece of art live. But as soon as that man started talking about a new video clip, I knew what was coming.

The moment, the only moment I missed earlier this year happened now.

Killpop“.

And by this, right here right now, the festival was complete. I didn’t need anymore than that, but again, who am I to complain for some more? “Before I Forget”, “Duality” and my personal favorite “Eyeless” (seriously, how can you not go batshit to that song?) followed by “Spit it Out”, and as you guys know, “Spit it Out” is my favorite moment of the entire show. Wrapped it up with “Custer” and left the stage.

DSC02416
(This is literally the only decent shot I have, haha)

For encore they did the “(sic)”, “People = Shit” and wrapping up the entire set, and for my part, the festival with “Surfacing”. I’m not gonna lie when I say I was SO TEMPTED to go in the mini moshpit that was behind us. Maybe next time.

And with that, they left the stage and I left the arena. Or actually, I bounced. I’m running on pure adrenaline after a show like that, and even thought I can’t recall actually SEEING anything off the show, more than my own hair and a few dots moving on the stage, I can’t help myself but to keep bouncing around. I need to get rid of the energy, you know? Oh, I also said goodbye to the two guys who just for the moment became my SlipKnot brothers. A shame I never caught their names. Bummer.

Got back to the camp, ate a bit and fell asleep with Dionysus in my ears. Even though I never liked the idea of going home on Sunday, SlipKnot helped me feel content.

Graspop Metal Meeting Day 2: Friday

Posted in Concerts, Music, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , on June 19, 2015 by Sara Hammerzmith

First day of the festival started off…. at 7am in the morning. My tentbuddy, if you like, thought it was a good idea to arrive early in the morning on Friday, forcing me to get up abnormally early to help him find the spot. Lazy as I am I just stood up outside the tent and let him find his own way, which was.. pretty simple since our camp was close to the entrance.

Spent the next couple of hours what I do best – not socializing with anyone, slowly eating and slowly getting ready. Seriously, anyone who ever plans to travel with me – there is no point in trying to rush me to eat. I’m a slow eater. Around 12 I realized that it might be a good idea I head down to the festival area, which is one minute away to catch H.E.A.T, starting at 12.20.

Here’s the deal. My friend gave me the impression that queueing goes so quickly at Graspop, so I figured, against my better judgement, that it should be no problem “only” arriving about 20 minutes before showtime. I was dead wrong.

I was still in the line when I heard “A Shot of Redemption”, presumably second song of the set, and I was pretty much… Let’s just say, it was a good thing for people in Dessel that day that it was H.E.A.T and not Butcher Babies that was the band I was missing out on.

In the middle of “Tearing Down The Walls” I finally made it in and I ran faster than I have ever done before. Seriously, I’ve never considered myself a fast runner, but two places in this world – Boda Borg and concerts, brings out the marathon runner in me.

I thought to myself that as long as I make it to the stage for “Mannequin Show”, I can slow down, so once I was almost there I slowed down for a moment to not completely drain myself and of course… the melody to “Mannequin Show” started. Oh well then, right back onto it!

Made it to second row (where are all the people?) and got to enjoy the last 20 minutes of the show at least, consisting of songs as “Beg Beg Beg”, my personal favorite “Emergency”, “Breaking the Silence” and wrapping it up with “Living on the Run”.

But you know, despite missing a lot of the show, I enjoyed the bits I did see. Erik Grönwall is an entertainer, even though I must admit it felt a little bit as he held back this day. This might be a direct response to the not so energetic crowd, what do I know. But damn, I love these men.

graspopheat

Butcher Babies

Right after H.E.A.T, who doesn’t even get a headline because of the mishaps, and with only a mere ten minutes between the sets I had to hurry a little bit, despite the stages being next to each other. I made it pretty far in, about second or third row or so, which was pretty good, if you ask me.

And… you know that feeling when you see a favorite band live for the first time? That feeling with “Oh shit! It’s really them!” That’s what I thought when Chrissy walked on stage as first person. I was like “Dude. That’s him. That’s actually him, whom I’ve seen only on photos on the internet before”. Jason and Henry joined followed by two of my heroines, Heidi and Carla.

Like. THEY ARE REAL. THEY ARE ACTUALLY REAL.

They opened up energetic with “The Cleansing” and look. You can say whatever you want about the ladies, about the groups intention, about how they are not “true”, but what you can never take away from Carla nor Heidi is that, just as Erik Grönwall, they are true entertainers.

“The Mirror Never Lies” was the second song on the list, and I must admit, I was surprised, but also glad to see how many people around me were just as, may I use the term “die-hard fans” as I was. I never really heard much about them having a fanbase here in Europe, but I’m glad I was wrong.

graspopheidi

“Goliath”, third song of the list followed by “Beerdrinkers & Hellraiser”. I must admit, when seeing them I kinda come to notice that the three men in the band, don’t really do a lot. They stand back, play their things and leave the show up to Heidi and Carla. I don’t mind, in all honesty, let the ladies do what they do best. Still baffles my mind why people discredits them.

A bit in the set it was time for the new song, “Monsters Ball”. I have never been too much of a fan of this song, as it kinda feel it’s just… pounding through. I always cared more for their melodic songs, but I have to admit something – this song, and especially the chorus works wonders in a crowd. “You can’t stop moving, no you can’t stop moving..” no, we really can’t, haha.

graspopcarla

After “Monsters Ball” it was time for a personal favorite of mine, “Crazy Horses”. “I Smell a Massacre” and “Magnolia BLVD” was the last song of the sets where the babies left the stage for this time.

God. That was a rush. Seeing a faveband for the first time is always such a rush.

Headed over directly to the merch to get a hand on a shirt and a poster before moving on to the Classic Rock tent and catching the first out of three The Lounge Kittens sets.

Most of you who’ve read my blog in the past knows about my small obsession with The Lounge Kittens ever since the Steel Panther tour, so getting the chance to see the Kittens not once but twice during this festival was awesome.

graspoprodkitten

After their set I headed over to the signing session for Butcher Babies, which was completely in vain. I guess Graspop lacks a bit here – It is never, NEVER a good idea to have the signing session begin neck in neck – there should always be a break inbetween to make sure that in case there’s a heavy flow of people or in case the band is late. It’s more sad for the Aborted fans who were kept waiting PAST Aborted’s signing time because Butcher Babies took so long.

Second thing, it’s never a good idea to allow people to take pictures at signing sessions, and I swear to God – I curse every, single, one of you who ever takes pictures at a signing session. Seriously, fuck you people. I do realize I sound bitter right now, but lets put it this way – there’s a reason Sweden Rock started to forbid photos. After they did so, twice, or even three times, as many people managed to get into the signing sessions after doing so. Also the major reason if I ever get into a band, I’ll never allow people to take pics at our signings. Never. Rather satisfy the many than glorifying the few, you know?

I come off very bitter here, and a little bit bitter, yes. But I’m more bitter about the failure in organization rather than not making it to the signing. Giving a mainstage act only 30 minutes is bad to begin with (Sweden Rock gives at least 45 mins even to the smaller stages) but yeah. Maybe they will learn, maybe they won’t. Spent almost an hour in that line for nothing, and if you hold on to your horses a little bit, I’m gonna demonstrate a bit further in this entry my point, but before that, Epica.

So, thankfully, Epica was starting on the mainstage in the time to make me feel better, and it sure does. Singers like Simone Simons makes everything better.  “Unchain Utopia” was just pure perfection, and I must admit, I’m not sure if the sets are really much shorter here or not, but it was over so quickly. I don’t understand why.

DSC02232

Right after Epica, I headed over to the classic rock tent again to catch the last our of three The Lounge Kittens sets (one of the sets were during Epica).

The set was just as energetic as fun as you’d remember them, and the set was a little bit different from the previous one, but still including “Rollin'” which I’ve always considered more of a favorite since I love the choreography.

graspoprosakitten

Now, I’m going to get back to Butcher Babies signing sessions. The Lounge Kittens stopped their set at about 18.10, or a bit after and I thought to myself, hey, why not go to Epica’s signing session? Why miss out on an oppurtunity like that? But what to get signed?

So around 18.10, I head over to the metal market, and go through the hassle to get a wristband, go to the first recordstore I see, pick up a random Epica album (The Quantum Enigma) and slowly started walking toward the signing area. I reached the line about 18.20, and they had signing time until 19. So, I wanna put this into perspective. I made it to Butcher Babies signing session 14.50, and they started 15.00, and they STOPPED signing at 15.45-50 (Epica had already started when they stopped), and this had them going over time by 15-20 minutes.

Here I actively come 20 minutes too late to a session, and guess what. I. Made. It. In. by 18.50 I was in to meet them band, hurrying through of course since I saw the grim reaper coming out (the lady who walks out and asks who everyone is there to see to estimate how many more can get in) and because the faster I get out, the faster more people can get in.

So, what was the difference? They didn’t allow photos. They. Did. Not. Allow. Photos, so I guess they DID learn from earlier on. Of course, some people still took photos, hell, even I took a pic of a guy and Simone. But there is such a difference when ten people take pictures rather than 100, you know?

After the session I headed back to the camp to drop off all the merchandise, or well, all and all, but the poster got in the way and I kept losing it.

Spent some time in the tent resting, drinking and eating before heading down to the festivalsite again, and this time it was time to see a band I haven’t seen in quite a few years: KISS.

They opened the set with “Detroit Rock City” and the show was a fact.

KISS…. KISS is quite the show. I’m not gonna say this in a surprised matter since I’ve seen them live before, but I mean, DAMN. If it wasn’t fireworks it was confettis, if it wasn’t that it was pyro and lights and elevators and Paul did his little ride and God only knows!

I’m not gonna write a lengthy bit about this, since it will be way too long, and I don’t really have a lot to say. What do you say about the best band in the world?

The only thing I HAVE to say is that I completely owned my friend. Nailed to for see every single song, while he could be soooo off. Love it.

DSC02277

After KISS was done I headed over (alone) to the second mainstage to wrap this long day up with Marilyn Manson.

And seriously, the last time I saw him was in 2007 and I had forgotten how good he was. Not only live, but also musically. He’s not typically the first I turn to when I wanna listen to something, but that sure is about to change. Loved every single minute, and by every song I made it closer and closer to the stage and I found myself almost having the same spots as on Butcher Babies, despite arriving after the first song has started. Thanks for the evening, Manson.

graspopmanson

After Manson I went back to the camp and went directly to bed. Saturday was gonna start fairly late in concert speaking, but I wanted to check out the market properly, as well as catching up on some sleep.

Shipwrecked

Posted in CDs, Music, Uncategorized with tags on June 16, 2015 by Sara Hammerzmith

Today was a pirate kind of day, an Alestorm kind of day. For today’s pleasure, I blasted their 2011 album “Back Through Time“.

I haven’t to this day listened through this album, as it was a part of the big haul from Sweden Rock and it has taken me some time to go over that (because I also have to spend time listening to the bands I’ll be seeing on Graspop)

Without having heard “Sunset on the Golden Age”, I can say that this far “Back Through Time” has to be my favorite Alestorm album. Songs like “Sunk’n Norwegian”, “Shipwrecked”, “Back Through Time” and “Swashbuckled” (this one this one this one!) are just some of the perfect examples on better tunes on this one.

What really caught my attention, I must admit, with this one is how short it is. I managed to go over it about three, four times in a very short period of time (I have a schedule I have to be done within) which surprised me. But when you notice that one of their songs is seven seconds you aren’t all that surprised anymore…

But yeah. I’m not sure really what to add to this – it’s the same Alestorm as always, and always as enjoyable. Gives you that extra strength to climb all the stairs at 4 am in the morning.

Back Through Time

Posted in CDs, Music with tags on June 15, 2015 by Sara Hammerzmith

Starting my second job this week, which means I will travel long distances on a bike every morning for a couple of hours. This is the perfect time to listen through albums properly, instead of picking out your favorite songs and leaving it at that. This day, partly as a preparation for Graspop I spent the first hour going through Butcher Babies catalogue, which consists of the ep “Uncovered” and the full-length “Goliath”. I think both albums are pretty decent. I’m not gonna sit here and praise either of them, because like with SlipKnot – the good songs are really good, and the bad songs are really… bad, in a way you could say. But to focus more on the good, starting with “Goliath” – “I Smell a Massacre“, “Goliath“, “In Denial” and “The Mirror Never Lies“, topped off by my personal favorite “Magnolia Blvd” are the better songs on the album. What all of these songs, for me, have combined is the perfect mixture of heavy/brutal-ness, melody as well as attitude in the singing. Seriously, “The Mirror Never Lies” is a song I could play… whenever. I should probably blast it when going to Boda Borg with our newbie, so he knows what he’s getting himself into.

Moving on to “Uncovered“… Well, first of all, it’s an EP so it ain’t a lot to take from. Most of the songs on these album seem to be on the theme of party. “Beerdrinkers, Hellraisers”, “Don’t Give a Fuck” etcetera…. None of these are my faves, I’m gonna head right for the two big for me – “They’re Coming To Take Me Away” is the first. For being Butcher Babies as we know them, it’s pretty melancholic in a way, but I just… They got it. Carla and Heidi makes it sound like they are possessed or something, which I assume is the core with the song, which is a cover of Napoleon XIV’s old song.

Second one is “Crazy Horses”, simply because it reminds me… no. Just kidding, what I really like about it is the guitarsolo. It’s, as Curt would put it, trippy. A little up and down haha, I don’t know how to properly explain it. But I can listen to the song only for that little part.

So yeah. Get prepared for a few of these in the future, or at least for the next few weeks. // Sara

REVIEW: Burning Point – Burning Point

Posted in CDs, Music, Uncategorized with tags , , on June 12, 2015 by Sara Hammerzmith

When I say Finland, most of you will say metal. I don’t think there’s any country in the world who is so linked with metal as Finland is, and Finland is also the homeland of Burning Point. They’ve held their spot in the metal scene since the mid 90’s and have previously released five albums – “Salvation by Fire” in 2001, “Feeding the Flames” in 2003, “Burn Down the Enemy” in 2007 and “Empyre” in 2009 and “The Ignitor” in 2012.

In 2014, the guitarist and vocalist of the band, Pete Ahonen invited Nitte Valo (previously in Battle Beast) to take over the vocals, said and done. From that day on, they were a female fronted metalband. Their sixth studioalbum is the first album to feature Nitte and contains of five new songs and six re-recorded classics.

The first thing I notice, especially when I think back on the older material Burning Point has, is how much heavier they have gotten. While the older were more… how do I put it, more classic “calm” power-metal, this has a lot more aggression to it. There is quite the difference between the new songs and the old – the new songs are far more aggressive and fast than the re-recorded ones.  There is some softness though – like in “Heart of Gold” which is still as magical with Nitte singing as with Pete, as well as “My Darkest Time”.

It’s a well-balanced album – heavier songs combined with softer, epic songs combined with fast songs. So far so good, however, I can’t say I’m jumping of joy when I hear the new tunes. They are good, but they don’t quite match up. And the re-recordings… Some are good, some are decent. The production is good – the execution is good. Nitte’s voice is extremely powerful, and it’s one of the things that drags up the grade for me.

It’s a decent album. It’s a good start. I’m looking forward to see what they can do in the future, with their new singer. If you like bands like Iron Maiden mixed with Sabaton, you’ll like this.

Best: “Dawn of the Ancient War”. Love the song, with Nitte or Pete. “Heart of Gold” needs a little attention too, I think.

Sweden Rock Festival 2015: Thursday

Posted in Concerts, Music, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , on June 4, 2015 by Sara Hammerzmith

So, because of various mishaps like with my knee, I got to bed extremely late. Around 6-7 in the morning. For all of you partypeople, this may not seem late, but to me it is, since I had been up since 7 the day before. But some things, like cleaning an open wound full of stones and filth, is something you have to do. Which is bad for me, because I cannot deal with my own blood. I can fix other people easily, but get dizzy and nauseous by my own blood and wounds.

My plan was to catch Delain in the morning, but had to give it up because of the knee. I need a certain amount of sleep to function, or more, to function without having my brain whining about too little sleep. I can’t enjoy things properly if I’m tired, you see.

So, I stayed in the tent a bit longer and once I was up and running, or well, not running, no running on this little leg, I first hit the pharmacy store for proper sterile compresses and proper cleaning fluids and bigger bandaids, and I was back in the tent to keep clean and disinfect the wound, and in all honesty, aside Delain my first band for the day was Toto at 19, so I had plenty of time.

When all was done with the wound I hit the streets and dashed immediatley for the festivalarea. Not because I was late, not because I had a band I wanted to see… but because I had to get to the one place I’ve been waiting the entire YEAR to visit….

Hot Shot Records.

I can honestly say that is my number one favorite record store in the entire world. I could fucking pay to go to SRF only to visit that store, I shit you not.  So finally, after a year of waiting, I was in the little piece of heaven on Earth. The biggest mistake on my part though, was that I had forgotten the long list of rare bands and CD’s I was looking for, but it didn’t matter. In my desperate tries to find and Delain CD’s I stumbled upon a very familiar name.

Dionysus.

My heart started to beat a little faster. The album I had found was NOT “Anima Mundi” which was the album that was on my list, but I picked it out anyway. I kept on looking through the Dionysus albums, but “Anima Mundi” was nowhere to be found. Damn. Well, Dionysus is good anyway so I might as well take their other albums.

Then I noticed, that “Fairytales and Reality” was a little bigger, I figured it was some limited super duper deluxe including a DVD version, and you know, why not? Why not get the best? But then I noticed it wasn’t a super deluxe edition, it was actually just a bundle of two Dionysus albums. And when I turned it over about 90° to check what the other CD was…. my heart practically stopped, and my eyes teared up.

“Fairytales and Reality” was bundled with no other album than my long lost friend, “Anima Mundi”.

I am not, under any circumstances exaggerating when I say I literally teared up when I finally found the album I’ve been looking for for so long, that I’ve longed so much to have. Oh god. The relief. Seriously, I can’t even properly explain the relief.

When most of the shock had laid down, I looked through some other sections and stumbled upon a few Nostradameus albums, which I remembered I was looking for. Same here as with Dionysus, I first found and album I was not looking for, but hey, I like the band so who cares? Gladly, I managed to find “Words of Nostradameus” as well after a bit of looking. So. Three Dionysus albums and two Nostradameus albums later I left Hot Shots for the first time this year in favor of getting something to eat before Toto. And I took the opportunity to catch the last few songs of Slash while eating, nice company.

TOTO

I went down to the parkinglot (and did not get lost this time!) to drop off my newely bought CDs and made it back LITERALLY on the SECOND that Toto’s intro started. Talking about making it just in time, huh? I got pretty good spots on the side of the stage, so I’m more pleased than ever.

They opened the show with “Running out of Time” and was well recieved by the audience. The continued on with “I’ll supply the Love” and the show was on.

Since these entries will cover an entire day of concerts, I’ll keep all the reviews pretty short. But what I can say is that the set was close to perfect. And it’s not really all about the band on stage, but also the atmosphere. You can say what you want about pits with headbanging and jumping around and stuff like that, but nothing beats the calmness and the epicness of witnessing a band like this, in the sunset. I’m talking about “Africa” in the freaking sunset. By that time, the knee and the broken fridge was all forgotten and it was all worth it.

That’s the effect music should have on you. Thank you Toto, for the most epic first gig of the festival.

HAMMERFALL

Right after Toto, I headed over the Rock Stage which is opposite side of Festival to catch up with the templars in HammerFall. I had spots pretty far in the back, but that’s what you get. I’ve come to notice I’m ALWAYS in the back when it comes to festivals. Why is that.

Anyway, they started off on time with “Hector’s Hymn” and continued down the same setlist, more or less, they had had throughout World Wide (r)Evolution tour, to my dismay if I may add. It’s really the same old story – same songs over and over, just changed the opener to “Hectors Hymn” and replaced “One More Time” with “Bushido”. Aside that, all the same old goodies are there – “Bloodbound”, “Any Means Necessary” (I do love this one though) and so on. But what can you expect from a festival gig?

But aside this, they were really good. Good energy on stage, despite having the sun straight in their eyes.

DEF LEPARD

So, from Rockstage, back to Festival stage. When it was time for Def Lepard to hit the stage, the darkness had started to lay its cover over the festival, which was absolutely perfect considering their massive light show. They opened the whole set with “Rock! Rock! (’til you drop)” and continued on with “Animal” and “Let it Go”. They were planned to have  a greatest hits set of the night, but I must admit… I was almost to mesmerized by the lightshow to think too much about the setlist.

It was like a big crossover between Katy Perry’s Prism tour and Lady Gaga’s Fame Monster Ball. The lights from Katy, and the stage set from Lady Gaga. Different road signs and various animation on big screens accompanied with well designed lights made this show a delight, not only musically but also visually.

Thanks you, Def Lepard!

MICHAEL MONROE

After Lepard it was run time deluxe. Or no running, like I said, but fast walking over to Sweden Stage which on the other side is a bit further away from Festival stage. While passing Rock stage I asked myself if I shouldn’t see Ghost instead. They were about to start 15 minutes after Michael, so I figured I could see how I felt about it once Michael got on stage. I’ve seen Michael Monroe, and Hanoi Rocks for that matter, quite a few times, as recent as last year, but I’ve never seen Ghost. And since my platypus in crime wasn’t there, I figured I could perhaps go see them for her.

Sadly, for Ghost, once Michael Monroe hit the stage I kinda forgot all about it. Michael… he has this certain kind of energy that is just so contagious it almost makes you wonder what he’s on, and I assume he’s like me, high on life.

The set was as good as a Michael Monroe show always is. High energy, good tunes, well played and all that. And of course yes, the mister was climbing high in the stagebuildnings this time as well. He really did this already in the Hanoi Rocks days.

But. I can’t deny, that I kept looking over my shoulder to see the distant lights of Ghost. And still pondering. Should I stay or should I go? My love for Michael kept me there for quite the time, but as it got closer and closer to the end, I dashed in the middle of the last song in favour of catching Ghosts last song, to at least snap some pictures of Papa Emeritus III, which I had planned to have printed for my platypus.

GHOST

I made it pretty much in time for “Monstrance Clock” to begin, and I realized I knew the lyrics. And why did I know the lyrics? Because this is the same song Lordi kept playing when setting up their stage during Tour Force One. Who would have thought! It was a good ending, thanks for that Ghouls and Papa.

With all of this being said, I hit the tent and hit the bed immediatley. Never before have I had to stay up this long at Sweden Rock. What just happened.

J- Best Drummer of a band in your opinion

Posted in A-Z Music, Music, Uncategorized on May 29, 2015 by Sara Hammerzmith

Again, I won’t be judging the skills too much per se, but again aim for my favorite drummer rather than the best in the world. When it comes to arguing about musicians, people will always have their own opinion, you know? Half of the world praises Joey Jordison, the speedball, and half of the world hates him. Half of the world loves Lars Ulrich, half hates him. No matter how you twist and turn, there will always be people who hate on it, so, therefore, I went with my favorite drummer in a band.

And it should come to no surprise to all of you, that that particular drummer is no one less than pet the destroyer, Kita.

Lordi i Göteborg 078

So this was essentially the only picture I had available close enough on this computer. Oh well.

So Kita. As most of you know, Kita has always been my favorite member of Lordi, or actually, perhaps not always. There was indeed a period where I didn’t have a favorite member at all, but then I saw him waving the sticks behind his kit after they had won the Eurovision Song Contest, and that’s when I fell in love with him, so to speak. He was so cute.

I’ve met him two times, in his monstrous disguise, first in 2006, which is pictured above. I already wrote about some of it when writing about OX, but seriously, it’s a fond memory. Both me and Lina were so scared, or shy perhaps, to walk up to them, and when Kita saw my shirt he started calling out for us to come over (and OX joined in as well when he saw Linas shirt). I kept staring at the floor being so shy, and when I was just about to crash right into OX, I was stopped by Kitas arm going around me. Thank god for that. He turned me around, told me he liked my shirt and then the picture was taken.

2009 was a little “slower”. I was the first to enter the backstage room, and Kita was already sitting there. Which scared me A LOT, haha. It went pretty fast from that – I got my shirt signed, a hug from him and a small chat.

Who would have thought, that when Paula and I went to Nosturi in 2010, that it’d be the last we ever saw of him? I don’t think anyone saw it coming at that point.

Yeah. Mana, and definitely Otus, may pass him skill-wise. But he’ll always be one of my first love’s, when it comes to loving musicians, and no skill, speedball or big drumset can ever come above that.

Thanks for all, pet the destroyer.

Why Can’t This Be Love?

Posted in Music on May 14, 2015 by Sara Hammerzmith

So basically, I stumbled across a video of Erik Grönwall performing this song from Swedish Idol, which goes many many years back actually.

And, naturally, this reminded me of the original version of the song. Which so happens to be one of my absolute favorites, like, ever.

I guess most of you knows, but for those of you who do – “Why Can’t This Be Love” is originally made by Van Halen, released on their “5150” album back in 1986. Really, a LOT of good albums were released in ’86 and ’88… anyway.

My first memory with this song dates back to 2010, and Stockholm Rock Out. I remember it all so clearly – it was before Pretty Boy Floyd was about to go on stage that it was played on the speakers. And it was instant love for me. What I like most is the chorus. How do I even put this into words? The melodyline is just so sweet that you just…can’t not like it. A lot of you may not like it, but I can’t stop. Can’t stop listening to this song. And the moment when it was played… it was the perfect moment. Inside a venue with people exactly like you, singing to the very same song… I didn’t know the lyrics at that point of course but you know…

This has become one of my absolute favorite songs. I can’t even begin to describe to you guys.
