Two days until release, and this is the time I find it a good time to preorder both the new Amaranthe album as well as the new Lady Gaga album. I don’t know what has happened with me lately – usually I’m good at preordering like months and months ahead, but now I’m doing it with just days ahead, same story for “Monstereophonic” when it was time.

Why is this? Is this because of lack of time, or this lack of interest? I really don’t know anymore, but I’m very very excited that I finally placed the order, because I can’t wait to have both of these albums in my hand. Fresh music with both Amaranthe and Lady Gaga, what could possibly be better? Especially the latter one, seeing I was worried for a while there would be no LG5.

And also. The smell. The smell of new albums. Ahh.

So, suffering a bit from post concert depression, as always, I met up with Kyo downtown after work for some catch up dinner. It’s sort of crazy – I’ve been thrown into a work position where it feels like time just disappears constantly – for instance – Ireland is only three weeks away! How crazy isn’t that?

It was nice to sit down and talk a bit about everything that has happened and that will happen, and enjoy a nice meal. We stopped by the partystore to pick up supplies as well.

Speaking of that. I really, really, cannot wait any longer for this Lordi tour to embark. HONESTLY. It’s going to be so good. I’ve stayed away from as much spoilers as I possibly can, and despite knowing the setlist, I haven’t seen any actual performances yet, which makes it even more interesting. And then of course, our little tricks. We had a successful pilot made during Powerwolf over the weekend, and now I simply cannot wait to do it for real.

Maximize

Posted in Music, Uncategorized on October 17, 2016 by Sara Hammerzmith

So, a couple of days ago Amaranthe released a new single off their upcoming album, and it so happened to be the opening track off the new album, “Maximalize”.

So, well, where do I begin with this song. It starts very typically Amaranthe, like we heard in songs like “Hunger”, “The Nexus” and “Digital World” to mention a few, and it continues on walking on the borderline between metal and pop, in that perfect way that only Amaranthe can really do. It’s got a toned down yet interesting verse, and a catchy, sticking and fun chorus. Very similar to old opening songs, as far as song structure goes.

While still being a lot on the pop side, it’s not in any way as bad as “That Song” was, and after hearing this I’m looking more and more forward towards the album coming out this Friday. Seriously. I love how they released three completely different songs. Smart move!

Armata Strigoi

This day was like, soooo slow! Or, I don’t know. I was supposed to go with the earlier bus, but decided to reschedule it in order to get some extra sleep. Poor little Robert had to get up superearly for work, but I could sleep in a bit. Got up with him to say some last good byes before he left, and then went back to bed. After a night like last night, it’s sort of hard to focus and sleep well, but I got it together somehow.

Sleepdeprived and with the slayerneck from hell I started collecting and putting my things together before making it down to Stockholm downtown. Since I made it quite about two hours ahead of bustime, I sat down and enjoyed a late and tasty “breakfast” at Espresso House, taking the time to finish some of these writings.

This one show has been great. It was a great start getting back into the gigs season, especially seeing my tours are coming up. Thank you guys involved – Dani, Toni, Robert, Sindra, Michelle, Claudia, Sandra and of course Powerwolf and Civil War. You are amazing!

Powerwolf @ Klubben, Stockholm, Sweden 15/10 – 16

The day was here! Finally! Seriously, like I said earlier, this couldn’t have arrived earlier. After a few ifs and buts regarding wardrobe, I went with the “Usual” clothes I’ve started using for this band, and started to put on my makeup when Robert came home from work. We had some improvised lunch based on popcorns before we got on the road and went to pick up Sindra before heading to Globen.

Once there, we met up with Michelle and had some quick dinner at Subway and then heading back to Fryshuset. We arrived exactly on the moment the doors opened, so it was nice. It was really, at least for me, cold outside so I was thrilled that we’d be let in directly. Especially since I also really really needed to go to the bathroom. So, after that was done we got into the venue and.. well. Started waiting. In the midst of everything, I get a text from Dani asking if you can pay the doors with cards… well.. no. Lucky for him and his friend, I had just withdrawn a lot of money so it was easily resolved.

So, once it, it was a bit of, I guess, catching up time. Haven’t seen these two since Clermont-Ferrand earlier this year, which, in some cases are fairly recent, but still feel like ages away. And very soon, Civil War started.

Civil War

So, right on time the boys went on stage and started off their set with “USS Monitor”… and seriously. I’ve missed this band so much. And that start off… It’s a nuclear attack right on. Seriously, having that particular song as a start off is just the most perfect start of what is to evolve into a perfect set of the night. The performed probably the longest set I have ever seen with them, and what made me superhappy was “Gods and Generals”. It’s one of those songs that I at first didn’t really notice, but as time went by, I started appreciating it more and more. I hoped they’d play it live, and they did. Made me superhappy.

They wrapped up the set with “Rome is Falling” – and I’ll be honest. having Noch Ein Bier being my first show ever with Civil War, I have always since then been wondering “Will they do Rome is Falling?” not because I think they’d exclude it, but because that anticlimactic moment stuck with me.

But, the show was amazing. It was so good, and I’m so happy to see them again. After this, I went out to get some water and then eagerly waiting for Powerwolf. Getting water seemed to be a task done hard, and I was back with the people just a little bit before Powerwolf began.

Powerwolf

So. Lights out. Intro rolling. Band walks on stage. And then… “BENEDICTUS…”

It’s like time is stopping. I’m not sure how many of you readers have ever been to a Powerwolf show, but what happens when they start, is that time stops. Everything around you just seizes to exist – it’s just you, the band, Attilas voice echoing through the venue, before you absolutely just lose it.

They followed up with “Coleus Sanctus” and then “Amen & Attack” – this song, like, I don’t think I’ve ever considered this one my personal favorite, however, it’s my absolute favorite song live. And a bit to my surprise, there was a moshpit starting. Or actually, it was already in “Blessed and Possessed”, but again. I remember when I saw Butcher Babies, and no one did anything. But at a power metal show, apparently they do.

161015powerwolf2klubben

“Sacred and Wild” was next song on the list, followed by “Army of The Night”. This song being the first song that really, like, caught my attention with this band, how can I possibly explain the feeling of Attila’s voice, “Mater Mariiiiiaaaa” echoing in the hall? The feeling of it? It’s indescribable. It’s a euphoric state of enlightenment, almost as you are lifted up, at least in spirit. Although it feels like you are levitating.

“Resurrection by Erection” was next, followed by “Armata Strigoi”. I must admit, while this may perhaps not be the best there has ever been, I still think there was a good reception from the crowd. They were with the band, singing, yelling, whatever, and I like that. It’s good to see an active crowd from up here.

“Dead Boys Don’t Cry” was next, and then… “Let There Be Night”. This song, on the other hand, is one of my personal favorites. Most certainly, the key segments. The segments after the choruses. We’re kind of back there with “Army of the Night”, but now it’s the work of Falk Maria’s finger that fills you up to the point where you feel like you’re about to burst. Seriously.

161015powerwolf1klubben

“Werewolves of Armenia” was next on the list, and I would dare to say that our side, Attilas side, sort of owned Falk Marias. Not to be like that but… Suck on that one, people! “In The Name of God” was next, followed by “We Drink Your Blood” where we did our first pilot test for some new shenanigans to do at Lordi shows. Without saying too much, I can say the pilot went fine, and the shenanigan is now officially green lit to do in Ireland.

They ended the set with “Lupus Dei”, before they thanked for the night and went off. Or well, not really.

“Agnus Dei” started echoing, and as powerful as the first opening, “Sanctified with Dynamite” started echoing, and seriously, these songs are simply so well made for opening. It’s an instant slap in the face, the instant adrenaline shot you need to get started.

“Saturday Satan” and “All We Need is Blood” wrapped up the set, and they left the stage for this night.

It was a great set, and a great night. It’s so good to see them again, finally. It has really only been like, six months, but I still crave that mineral.

After the show, we hung around for a while catching up before Robert and I headed home.

Thank you, to everyone involved in this show! I can’t wait for Friday.

Resurrection by Erection

Finally back on the road again! Quite honestly, it’s been waaay too long for me. I can’t believe I have actually not been on a trip nor a show since Sabaton Open Air. No lies when I say that this was long overdue, and that it was good to be back on the road again. The travelfever hit in a usual, and I’m just assuming it’s because of the lack of traveling really.

So, on the bus again – my beloved Swebus. Never ever have they failed me. It was the best feeling in the whole world when you have tucked in your luggage underneath, taken your seat, gotten comfortable and just stare out the window as the bus passes by city by city toward your destination. And the feeling you get when you finally reach Stockholm – lovely lovely Stockholm and you know that you are back in business.

Right after I got off, I jumped on the train toward Robert’s place and after a pretty sure trainride, I was there. He met me at the trainstation and we went off to the supermarket to pick up goodies for the evening. I had originally planned to go down to Harry B James to catch a band, but after a few ifs and buts I, or well we, decided to stay in, have a nice pizza and watch “The Metal Mass” DVD as preparations for tomorrow.

It was a nice evening – talking, catching up, watching the mighty wolves – perfect moodsetter for tomorrow.

REVIEW: Eden’s Curse – Cardinal

Posted in CDs, Music, Uncategorized with tags , , , on October 12, 2016 by Sara Hammerzmith

Eden’s Curse is a melodic hard rock band based in the United Kingdom, though the members of the band today are spread across the world. After the success of “Symphony of Sin”, the band took a two year break to work on and produce their fifth studio album, that we now hold in our hands as “Cardinal”.

This album starts off with a build up, emerging in a stomp off before heading into a heavy riff with melodic elements to it, before diving into the melody line that is the prechorus before exploding in the chorus with a statement saying “here we are”, heading into the second song that on the other hand is extremely melodic with serene melody hooks that stays in your mind, with an enchanting prechorus, to name a little.

I’ve noticed, in my notes, that I’ve used the word “pleasant” and “cosy” a lot. And I guess these two words do describe the album the best. While the album finds itself with a few heavier songs, such as “Messiah Complex”, I’d say the strongest elements on this album are the melodic hooks accompanied with the singers amazing vocal work. And not to mention – the beautiful cameo of Liv Kristine in “Unconditional”.

However, a song that caught my attention a little extra was “Utopian Dreams”. When I heard those synthesizers opening the song, working as a red thread throughout the song with it’s half-cocky lyrics, I was simply sold. This is one of the perhaps a little heavier song, but it all comes down to the melody line of the synth – and I honestly think this is my personal favorite of the album.

I really, really like this album. I think this album is a step forward from “Symphony of Sin”, with a lot of strong material, incredible hooks and some amazing vocal work. I really enjoyed this album, and I look forward to put some of these songs into a festival playlist, right next to Kryptos.

The Acoustic Principle

Posted in CDs, Uncategorized with tags , on October 11, 2016 by Sara Hammerzmith

So, about “The Holographic Principle”… What intrigues me a little extra, especially seeing I have the earbook edition, is the “The Acoustic Principle” bonus CD. Actually, this one may, and this is going to screw your heads over, a little bit more interesting than the actual album. Now this is an album where we hear Epica perform a way we have never heard them before.

It cover five songs – “Beyond the Good, the Bad and the Ugly” (“Beyond the Matrix“), which is more of a jazz/lounge music approach to “Beyond the Matrix” – seriously, this sends me right into a hotel lobby with a drink watching Simone in a long gown performing this in the 1920’s or something.

“Dancing in a Gypsy Camp” (“Dancing in a Hurricane”) where they take the oriental elements, well I was going to say a few steps further, but more like, a few miles further, going all the way, setting the mood of being in a gypsy camp at night, almost making you start moving your hips simply because of the enchanting rhythms.

“Immortal Melancholy” which has… perhaps more folk elements to it? It’s very soothing. Sends my thoughts back to a tavern at night time in front of the open fire with some mead in hand… Seriously, can we discuss how moodsetting this extra CD is?

“The Funky Algorithm” (“The Cosmic Algorithm”) do I even need to actually explain what this song sounds like? In case you didn’t get it from the title – funk! And there’s something truly remarkable, and new, to hear Simone use words as “booty”. I love this though. Seriously. I’m just directly thrown into a transcendental room where everything is literally tripping.

“Universal Love Squad” (“Universal Death Squad”) this is essentially Epica going Disney and Celine Dion. This is nothing but a serene ballad, soothing you and your soul while listening to it. This is the kind of song I’d put on when trying to relax.

I seriously love this. I love when bands themselves do other versions of their own songs. Not only does it show alternative ways these songs could be made, and how easy you can turn a song like these into anything else, but it also shows how wide these musicians are in their musicianship.

Epica – The Holographic Principle

Posted in CDs, Music, Uncategorized with tags , on October 10, 2016 by Sara Hammerzmith

“The Holographic Principle” marks Epica’s eight studioalbum to date, following up the success of “The Quantum Enigma”. The hype was real, at least for me personally for this album already when songs as “Universal Death Squad” and “Edge of the Blade” made their premiere, so, well, you guys already know how happy I was when it finally arrived on my doorstep, and seriously, listening to this album was pure bliss.

While the album is still very Epica the way we know them, I don’t think I’ve ever heard them experiment as much with different elements the way they have on this album. It starts already in the opening song, “Edge of the Blade” with interesting melodic patterns, creating and interesting conflict in the song, moving on to the second, “A Phantasmic Parade” that sounds like nothing I ever heard from them before. And this is something that continues throughout the album – making it extremely interesting, as you never know what to expect of the next song, not only because of the variety of them, but also because of the way they are built – it’s a perfect mixture of heavy elements, pouring out in bombastic vocals or enchanting melodies with the perfect amount of “accessories” as my AE teacher would call it, making every single minute of this album interesting.

The album goes from being extremely heavy at times, to then reach to Disney kind of levels in their songs, at one point even ending up in a song oriental elements sending my thoughts back to an old computergame called “Atlantis”, and not to mention, probably one of my favorite songs, if not the one on the album – “Beyond the Matrix”. With a feeling of a march to war with bombastic vocals and uplifting melody lines, this song is just beyond me. This song in particular makes me extremely happy. They really nailed it with this one.

The lyricwork is also remarkable. We already know that Epica’s been good with lyrics, but there’s something about this album that just makes it pop. Perhaps it’s the concept of it, about what is real, what is not real that challenge us into thinking outside the box. Some of the tracks reaches an existential questions like “The Cosmic Algorithm” and I’ve found myself losing myself in my thoughts when I’ve paid too much attention to the lyrics. Well done, Epica!

Well, with all of this being said, I guess we can easily say that I was sure as hell not disappointed with this, and now I can’t wait for the tour next year. It can’t come sooner.

Once Upon a Nightmare

Posted in Uncategorized on October 9, 2016 by Sara Hammerzmith

Today was my first free days in… two weeks? It has been… somewhat nice. A bit empty, though. Not really sure what I was supposed to do with my time, so I went down and picked up some stuff from Panduro and made a rough draft of what I want to have done with my suitcase.

I always liked the idea of having my stage name printed on a suitcase, partly to make it stand out more, but also to make it 100% proof to get back in case it’s lost in baggage. I have used the “designs” of bands flightcases as a starting point in it, and have thus created letters of “Hammerzmith” to go down the side of my suitcase. To start, I’ll have adhesive letters on, and perhaps, if I really like it, I’ll have it painted on permanently in the future. I just have to decide what direction I’ll have them in.

resvaska

There’ll be some tweaking left, but I’m liking the result. Now for sure no one will steal my suitcase at the airports. I’m also thinking about adding the Lordi mask logo, but I’ll have to see about that one.

Speaking of Lordi, three weeks ’til France! Hooray!
