Graspop Metal Meeting Day 1: Thursday

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on June 18, 2015 by Sara Hammerzmith

After a few ifs and buts and re-scheduled trips, it was time for me to head down under to Belgium for the third time this year, but this time there were no Amaranthe nor were there any Steel Panther. The occasion this time was no less than Graspop Metal Meeting.

Trip started early, already at 7 with the very best Swebus heading to Stockholm. Once in Stockholm a pitstop at Subway was mandatory before heading to the airport. Interestingly enough, gazing out the window on my way to Arlanda, I spotted a very familiar face walking down the street, which was no one less than Eric Rivers, guitarist of H.E.A.T. I was a little surprised, I wouldn’t expect to see him here, I thought he was on tour you know? But oh well.

Once at Arlanda, I checked it all in and got to my gate. I got pretty much on time – not too late, nor too soon. And while I sit there, looking at potential Graspop goers, five very familiar men walk into the lounge.

Erik Grönwall, Eric Rivers, Jona Tee, Crash, Jimmy Jay.

We are talking about the entire H.E.A.T. In my lounge. H.E.A.T is gonna be on the same plane as me. To Belgium. HOW OFTEN DOES THIS HAPPEN? Never.

Got to sit next to a sweet girl who had been to Sweden Rock, and we talked for a while. Also made friends with the older woman next to me, seriously, I’ve never been so social on a plane before. Holy shit.

Eventually we landed in Brussels, and after a few difficulties, me and some other swedes and other nationalities found the bus that would take us to Dessel and Gpop. The busride took a rough two hours, and after waiting in line for a long time to get my wristband I met up with Robert, and eventually Quentin who showed us the way to the camp.

Dumped my stuff and went with Robert to his camp and met up with some new people. Spent the rest of the evening talking about music, music and more music and travels and expectations.

Went back to my camp (with help from Robert haha) and set it up and got to sleep. All this travelling takes it’s toll, 14 hours is a bit.

Have spent most of the day running around. Tomorrow is D-day, the day I’ll leave for the land of waffles and rain again, Belgium. But not just Belgium, also Graspop Metal Meeting.

It’s gonna be real nice. I’m still a little unsure about some of the systems there, but I guess I will work it out eventually. Lets talk about the bands instead.

First of all, H.E.A.T. Five men of pure perfection, or well, their music are. Erik is such an entertainer, so despite seeing them… all the time this year, they’re one big reason.

But the biggest reason, all in all, must be the five piece band performing right after H.E.A.T.

Butcher Babies.

I really thought it’d take some time before I’d get to see this band live, and seeing them jump on the wagon for most of the European festivals, I was thrilled. And I cannot tell you guys enough how excited I am to see them.

Moving on to more obvious bands like KISS and Marilyn Manson as well as Korpiklaani, are also some of the band I’m excited to see even though they to this day may not count as a favorite.

And of course, the big two – Alice Cooper and SlipKnot.

SlipKnot… Do I even need to motivate? Or do you guys get it anyway? Okay good. And Alice… well. Alleysan is my housegod, and this is this years mandatory Alice show. God, it’s gonna be great.

Even though I’m stressed because of packing, I really can’t wait.

Shipwrecked

Today was a pirate kind of day, an Alestorm kind of day. For today’s pleasure, I blasted their 2011 album “Back Through Time“.

I haven’t to this day listened through this album, as it was a part of the big haul from Sweden Rock and it has taken me some time to go over that (because I also have to spend time listening to the bands I’ll be seeing on Graspop)

Without having heard “Sunset on the Golden Age”, I can say that this far “Back Through Time” has to be my favorite Alestorm album. Songs like “Sunk’n Norwegian”, “Shipwrecked”, “Back Through Time” and “Swashbuckled” (this one this one this one!) are just some of the perfect examples on better tunes on this one.

What really caught my attention, I must admit, with this one is how short it is. I managed to go over it about three, four times in a very short period of time (I have a schedule I have to be done within) which surprised me. But when you notice that one of their songs is seven seconds you aren’t all that surprised anymore…

But yeah. I’m not sure really what to add to this – it’s the same Alestorm as always, and always as enjoyable. Gives you that extra strength to climb all the stairs at 4 am in the morning.

Gravity Falls Challenge Day 17: Favorite Antagonist

Posted in 20 Days Gravity Falls Challenge, Uncategorized on June 14, 2015 by Sara Hammerzmith

Without a doubt, Bill Cipher.

S1e19_pyramid_guy

Since we haven’t gotten too many episodes of S2 just yet + my cable box not working, all I have to judge this bad boy on is “Dreamscaperers”, which gave away quite a lot already. Thinking about it, I’ve named all my ipods after GF Antagonists – Bill, Gideon…. Oh who would have thought.

Anyway, Bill Cipher, also known as the dream demon. Goes into people’s mind and dreams to screw things up. What I always liked about him, unlike Gideon, is that he just goes for it. Gideon gets distracted occasionally, and you know his weakpoints, Bill on the other hand, being a demon, makes things a lot harder. And judging on the writing in the book, he seems to be very dangerous.

I really can’t wait to see more of him in the series.

L- Least Favorite Record Label

Posted in A-Z Music, Uncategorized on June 13, 2015 by Sara Hammerzmith

I’m going to have to disappoint pretty much all of you.

I don’t, for now, have a least favorit label. I judged AFM solely on the music and not the label as a business, since I don’t know anything about it for now. And to say that a label is bad only because it hosts bands or artist I may not like… No. I can’t do that. Never.

So, I’m sorry people. This is probably the most boring entry in the whole alphabet about this, but I can’t just skip a letter either.

Recordlabel as recordlabel, they are all good.

REVIEW: Burning Point – Burning Point

Posted in CDs, Music, Uncategorized with tags , , on June 12, 2015 by Sara Hammerzmith

When I say Finland, most of you will say metal. I don’t think there’s any country in the world who is so linked with metal as Finland is, and Finland is also the homeland of Burning Point. They’ve held their spot in the metal scene since the mid 90’s and have previously released five albums – “Salvation by Fire” in 2001, “Feeding the Flames” in 2003, “Burn Down the Enemy” in 2007 and “Empyre” in 2009 and “The Ignitor” in 2012.

In 2014, the guitarist and vocalist of the band, Pete Ahonen invited Nitte Valo (previously in Battle Beast) to take over the vocals, said and done. From that day on, they were a female fronted metalband. Their sixth studioalbum is the first album to feature Nitte and contains of five new songs and six re-recorded classics.

The first thing I notice, especially when I think back on the older material Burning Point has, is how much heavier they have gotten. While the older were more… how do I put it, more classic “calm” power-metal, this has a lot more aggression to it. There is quite the difference between the new songs and the old – the new songs are far more aggressive and fast than the re-recorded ones.  There is some softness though – like in “Heart of Gold” which is still as magical with Nitte singing as with Pete, as well as “My Darkest Time”.

It’s a well-balanced album – heavier songs combined with softer, epic songs combined with fast songs. So far so good, however, I can’t say I’m jumping of joy when I hear the new tunes. They are good, but they don’t quite match up. And the re-recordings… Some are good, some are decent. The production is good – the execution is good. Nitte’s voice is extremely powerful, and it’s one of the things that drags up the grade for me.

It’s a decent album. It’s a good start. I’m looking forward to see what they can do in the future, with their new singer. If you like bands like Iron Maiden mixed with Sabaton, you’ll like this.

Best: “Dawn of the Ancient War”. Love the song, with Nitte or Pete. “Heart of Gold” needs a little attention too, I think.

Captain Morgans Revenge

PEOPLE! Today was a big day. As most of you know, Mötley Crüe is set to have their final tour forever this year, and while at Sweden Rock Vince announced they’ll be in Stockholm in November, and later we learned the tickets would be release on June 11th, which is, today!

Since I worked during the night (for some reason, I seem to be attracted to nightwork) I got up right before the ticket release, and I begged that maybe today, maybe I would get the tickets right away and not have to sit for an hour and click and click until the ones I want appear.

And guess what? I entered AXS waitingroom ten minutes or so before the release, and once the clock hit 9, I got to buy the tickets directly. I was literally one of the first persons to get to buy tickets. For the first time ever, I could freely chose any ticket I liked. So. Fucking. Happy.

Normal standing tickets was chosen (don’t really consider ourselves as big enough Mötley fans to buy Golden Circle, it’s unnecessary for us) and I was all done five minutes past nine. How fucking awesome isn’t that? And then I could peacefully go back to bed. Ahh.

BILJETTER

Spent the day preparing for Graspop. I really wanna be done ahead now, since I start working permanently on Monday night, and I don’t wanna have to rush like an hour before the bus leaves for Stockholm. All the necessities, such as matress, towel and sleeping bag and wheelchair for the bag has been packed and tomorrow I plan to go through clothing, make up and see what hygiene products I can pack down already now. Can’t. Wait.

Today was the day D, when I finally got out and bought a wheelchair for my dear little bag. Jula was the place, and a big black metal one with strong wheels was bought. Perfect fit for my bag, and he is fit for fight again.

Gladly, it ALMOST fit inside my bag as well. I need to tie it together and put some duct-tape over it, and it’s all good to go! Oh my baby. I was really worried about having to replace him. He is really the perfect bag.

I have slowly started to prepare for Gpop as well. Trying to plan what clothes and so on. The most perfect would be if I could have it all packed by the time I start my second job. You could only wish, huh?

K- Favorite Record Label

Posted in A-Z Music, Uncategorized with tags on June 9, 2015 by Sara Hammerzmith

I’m about to sound REALLY sponsored, but this is the cold hard truth. My favorite record label is without a doubt, AFM Records.

As some of you may know, or not know, is that this is indeed Lordis label. And Serious Black. And Dionysus. And so on. I’ve come to notice that a lot of bands and album I’d like, are all signed to AFM Records. I wasn’t even surprised you know, when I noticed Dionysus was a part of their stall.

So yeah. I don’t really know what to add to this but that AFM really is the place to be. One can only dream that I’d end up there someday as well, haha!

Of course. Nuclear Blast deserves an honorable mention as well – a lot of good bands in their stall.

Bringer of War

Posted in Uncategorized on June 8, 2015 by Sara Hammerzmith

So basically, let me tell you a little story. In the beginning of May, I ordered a Toto album, “IV” for those of you who cares. Alongside it, I bought Firewinds “Days of Defiance”, because it was in the same discount program as Toto, and because it was recommended. And as you know, I’m not too picky – I’m very willing to buy albums with bands I’m not too familiar with.

So, said and done, I ordered it. And then I noticed something. It was a “Item to order”. 15-30 days delivery.

Here’s the deal with CDON – look, I love CDON, but there are some things that are just sadly true. And one of them, is this: If an item is “Item to Order” it will be very late, or never show up at all. If it has 15-30 days delivery, you might as well just sit around and wait for the email who says they can’t deliver it. Especially since this is a limited edition of said album.

So understand my surprise, when I’m walking around in Hot Shot records at Sweden Rock, and get this mysterious text that says “Your order on CDON has been posted”. What? What order? Have I placed an order on CDON? No?

Checked my email, and exactly WHAT CDON  had actually mailed me.

And would you know.

They had actually managed to dig up this little bad boy. They had managed with the one thing I never thought they’d be able to. They had managed to dig up the album I never thought they’d deliver.

Holy hell CDON, good on you. GOOD ON YOU.
